Screencasting Experience

I have previously screen-recorded and used Screencast-o-Matic before, so I was relatively familiar with the program. Although I do like screen recording, I did find it a bit hectic originally. I have never used Screencast-o-Matic on an iOS device before, so I ran into a lot of privacy sharing issues. My Macbook would not allow me to record anything that was on my screen, and I was having trouble trying to figure out a way to allow my settings to record my screen. After turning on screen sharing for Screencast-o-Matic through the System Preferences, I was able to successfully record my screen. I realized that because Apple is worried about a third-party screencasting website, that was most likely why the program was blocked initially. I believe screencasting is a valuable skill especially for those who work remotely. I believe that it is a lot easier to record your screen and your actions and send it over to a coworker for them to follow. I think that is a more efficient way to send over instructions compared to telling someone verbally over a video call or phone call. A project like creating tutorials can benefit from screencasting. For instance, if a person does not know how to use a program, someone who is familiar can do a screen record type tutorial and send it to them. This way, the person learning can just follow along and ask questions whenever they encounter a task or action they do not understand. I have seen and relied on a lot of Youtube tutorials that often use screen-recording as a way to teach others. I believe that it is a lot more beneficial for those who are visual learners who prefer following the instructor rather than reading about it. Not to mention, screencasting is also a great alternative to screen sharing. Even though I know of a lot of programs that allow them to screen share, I believe that screencasting is great because the file is permanent. If you forget the tutorial, you can always go back and look at the video again.

Hello! I love how you analyzed how Screencasting could help people. It’s true: a lot of tutorials on Youtube and on the Internet have been screencasts, which help people tremendously. It’s great to learn how to di it with easy software.

  2. Hey Angelica,

I also found the program Screencast-o-Matic a bit confusing to use. One of the problems I was having is that I couldn’t get my audio to work. I tried using different headphones, turned off my computer and still nothing. I fixed the problem by reinstalling the program for the third time. Even though Screencast-O-Matic did the job, I believe there’s better options out there for screen recording.

Hi Angelica, I agree with your last point about screen casting being a great idea for tutorials. If someone wants to show others how to do something remotely, it works great for Youtube videos. I will definitely use screen casting in the future for school assignments.
